Finally managed to get a better photo of this print.
It’s a weird print - it seems to change depending on the angle you look at it from (probably because it’s a 2-block lino print and the two layers of ink are not completely opaque), so photographing it is particularly difficult!
A limited number of prints of it are available on my website and on my Etsy Store.

…and this is an example of the artwork I was doing a few years ago (I was obsessed with the medium of collage/assemblage - it really suited my mindset then).
Also, I’d varnish anything that moved with thick sepia-coloured wood varnish.

Resolutions for the Second Half of 2012

While I’ve been doing plenty of photography this year, it occurs to me that there are some areas where more effort is still needed.

So:

  1. I will get off my backside and attend the life-drawing evenings again, to get back into drawing practice.
  2. I will clear some space in my studio/library/office so that it doesn’t resemble the overflow room in a charity shop.
  3. I will do some more printmaking - whether that be letterpress, lino, or woodcuts.

More masks

I put my day-job lunch hour to good use today by making plans for creating a whole selection of new masks (Venetian carnival masks all decorated in a very non-Venetian style) for an extended series of photographs with different models.

The “Bone-mask” is already complete (posted here a week or so ago). I’m now exploring some other ideas for mythographic/mythopoeic masks, and have a (still growing) list of nine other masks to make. This is getting very Lavondyss-like.

The photographs will be of blurred, nude bodies, only partially emerging from the shadows, with just the mask and occasional limb in focus (very shallow depth-of-focus).

A slightly better angle on the mask after today’s paint-job.
The mask is for a series of photographs of a model wearing the mask. Very tight focal length, so that the nude body is blurred and only the mask is in sharp focus.
If you’re based in Brighton and want to try being a masked artist’s model for a day, here are the details.

Artwork plans

  • This weekend: New doll-art from artist Françoise Duvivier on my main website (should be up by Sunday afternoon)
  • Next weekend: New drawings from artist Wayne Wolfson on my main website.
  • Next weekend: …will also mark the closing date for anyone wanting a free set of postcard-sized prints from my Medea photoshoot (click here to get a free set before it’s too late!).
  • Jan/Feb 2012: Hopefully another photoshoot with Elena (picking up the Medea theme from the last photoshoot and taking it further).
  • Jan/Feb 2012: A new photoshoot with Alice Kemp, which sounds like it will end up as a pre-Rapaelite theme with a dark surreal twist.

Planning artwork

While my free postcard sets are (slowly) getting discovered by art lovers, I’m planning my next pieces of artwork.

I already have a few ideas for a second “Medea” photoshoot that I’ve shared on Tumblr before (they consist of a similar shoot, but with smoke and tribal markings: not entirely sure how to do that - especially the smoke - but I’ll work it out).

I’m also halfway through a project to make some Letterpress posters. The letterpress work has been done, but I’ve got a couple of lino prints still to cut before I can finish them off. I’m hoping to have them finished in Jan 2012.

The Book of the Erinyes is still ongoing, albeit on the back-burner at the moment. Hoping to finish that at some point in 2012.

And I’m scribbling down ideas for more pieces every day - it’s a very creative time for me at the moment :)

I want to…

…do a short photography project next week (while the Book of the Erinyes project is temporarily on hold), but I have no available models and precious few ideas at the moment.  I suspect this may cause difficulties…

Why is Brighton so bereft of willing victims models, goddamnit?

Next art project…

While I’m still working on the Book of the Erinyes I’ve already started thinking about the next piece of artwork.

I’m torn between following the Greek Mythology arc (maybe something based around Maenads/Bacchae?) or swapping to something even further back into the dawn of history (I’m particularly drawn by ancient Sumerian myths around Inanna & Ereshkigal).

Suggestions always welcome!

The Lazarus Corporation - relaunched

And I think we’re live with the relaunch of my art website.

This weekend is “no guarantees” weekend - bug-fixing and tweaking for various different browsers will be going on. Seems to be OK in Firefox and Internet Explorer.

So, would you?

So many people proclaim a love of art, yet so few want to be part of it.

I just need a ready supply of people wanting to model for photographs like the ones I did a couple of months ago (below) and then I can keep producing artwork at a regular pace.  For some reason it’s hard to find people to model in Brighton - never had that problem when I was living in Nottingham.

(If you’re in the south of the UK - within striking distance of Brighton - and you want to help create artwork by being photographed then LET ME KNOW!)

I’m creating a print run of around 20 of these “broadsheets” alongside the Book of the Erinyes.
They’re 20” high x 15” wide posters printed with wood & metal movable type (letterpress) and lino prints.
There are still two more lino prints to do (which will fill the spaces underneath the two blocks of text) which I hope to get finished & printed in the next 2 weeks.
