Free Pussy Riot
Pussy Riot is a Russian feminist performance art group.
You may have heard that they are now facing 7 years imprisonment for a short anti-Putin performance in a Russian church.
They need financial assistance to fight this charge, and you can help:

(Includes news, background information, and details of how to donate.)
Some coverage via the BBC.

You’re doing better than me, I don’t even have the day off, I just didn’t go and I’m still in bed at 2pm. Productivity FTW!
In lieu of creating anything new, I’ve forced myself to get round to printing the first proper print of a lino cut I did earlier this month. Just not feeling the creative...

I’ve got today off work in order to create some artwork and generally do useful stuff, and instead I’m watching a streaming bootleg video of the Sisters of Mercy from a gig that I went to in 2011…

I’ve booked day off work tomorrow, so hoping to get some more artwork done - probably another lino-cut based around the crow mask (which keeps my momentum going until I can find a model for the Crow Mask photographs).

Good luck with the trains!
Yeah, I get the feeling it’s not going to be the usual easy journey…

Going up to London tomorrow
Not for the Olympics, but to see a performance of Richard III at the Globe Theatre.
I’m a big fan of Shakespeare’s history plays and the Globe is such a great venue.

I really want to take some mask photographs...
…you know, with dark stunted woods and blasted heaths and all that.
Sadly urban Brighton is somewhat short on dark stunted woods and blasted heaths.
A ritual is the enactment of a myth. And, by participating in the ritual, you...

I’ve been exhausted ever since I got back from the US over a week ago. It feels like I haven’t got over the jet-lag yet, but that’s just ridiculous.
I think I might book a couple of days holiday next week and have a long weekend relaxing and creating.

Hello! Is There Anybody In There?
Haven’t done this since early June, so:
Tonight I’m bored, so I’m actively soliciting your questions, comments, and general communication. Got a question? Now’s the time to ask it:

Three important things:
1. Wearing masks alters our perceptions, especially of ourselves. Masks can be used to embody ideal personas or create anonymity. They also affect our self awareness, encourage less limited behaviors and reduce reliance on a singular self-narrative.
3. Putting on a mask, especially one...

I like that you intend to start it before you know what it will be. Much like my approach to writing. It’s a very honest way to create. That’s what I tell myself.
If I sit around trying to plan out exactly what I’m going to do then it rarely works - or I become locked into an eternal whirlwind of...

Hello to all the new followers over the past few...
Sorry, it’s been a busy few weeks (by busy, I mean I wasn’t here much).
So here’s what you’ve let yourself in for:
My name is Paul and I’m an artist living in Brighton. Unfortunately that’s not my full time job - on weekdays I run the web department for a publishing company, but let’s not talk about that.
You can see various selected pieces of my...

What’s the next painting going to be?
Erm, that probably should have been a fourth bullet point: “work out what the hell the next painting should be”

In the next 6 days I must:
Tidy my studio room to a point where it actually becomes usable for making artwork (rather than just browsing the internet).
Find a volunteer to model for the Crow Mask photographs next weekend.
Start my next painting.
Back from Florida...
And while it was a work trip (so I spent all day in meetings in offices, rather than exploring) I did manage to get out into the Everglades one evening and see alligators in the wild, one of them (about 5’ long) drifting up to within a metre of me. That was very cool.
Just arrived in Florida for a work trip. Sounds far more interesting than it is - daytimes spent in meetings in the office, and evenings spent bored in the hotel.
Plus I’ve been awake for 20 hours travelling. I hate transatlantic flights.
Yeah, I know - #firstworldproblems

The new texture looks great. I want to touch it, I know you’re not really supposed to do that with paintings.
Yeah, it’s a shame because touching paintings is great (artist’s prerogative - only if they’re your own paintings, of course)

Would it be childish of me to say: I want? But I do want: theater, light, color,...

Thanks to all of you who have ‘liked’ my painting!
I’ve just ordered some acrylic glaze medium to start the second phase of it.
Starting painting again has been … traumatic. It’s frustrating having to relearn skills that I used to have, but have forgotten over the past years while I’ve been working in other media.
