I’d really like to see a newsprint/ collage type one- like some of the art on your website… but for someone’s face.
Ooh, that could be good. I might have a go.

I’m getting a lot of likes for the half-finished bark mask, mainly because it got featured on the Crafts tag - many thanks to whoever arranged that, and thanks to everyone who liked or reblogged it. :)
The finished (-ish) version is here. I’m hoping to do a photoshoot with it on Saturday (more details here), so will be posting some photographs of it in use in the near future.
Another...

Hmmm, well there are ways and means, but this box is too small! I would be very interested to see a film you produced though.
Hmmm let me look into the practicalities…

enterthenoctuary replied to your post: you should do a film with the masks
… I’ve never made a film, but I know a bit about them… (I also have ‘The Complete Film Production Handbook’. It’s rather out of date now, but presumably still useful.
It’s very tempting - it’s certainly something that I’d love to do, and it’s certainly more achievable in these days of digital film...

Did the boiling do the trick then?
Not really - although it probably did sanitise the bark, which will probably please the person who ends up wearing it for the photographs!
In the end I cut the bark into much smaller pieces, pared it as thinly as I could, and built it up on the mask like a mosaic.

Its looking pretty good already!!
Thank you! :)
Yes, I’m very pleased with it so far. There was one point yesterday morning where I was ready to throw it away because it wasn’t working, but I’m glad I worked through that.

enterthenoctuary answered your question: I have two pieces of oak bark and one blank mask. …
I do not sir.
I doubt anyone does, but it was worth a try! ;)
The entire house smells like an old damp forest...
…which isn’t surprising as I spent the evening boiling oak bark in the kitchen to prepare it to be attached to a mask I’m making for a series of photographs.
It’s a strangely pleasant smell - primal/primeval in some way. Woodland scents can be curiously bewitching.

Quick question for Brighton people...
Does anyone know where there are some felled tree trunks in Brighton that I can get a large (approx 6-8” square) piece of bark from?
I’m after the bark to use as part of a mask I want to make, to be built on top of a plain Venetian mask I already have, so thick bark is not absolutely needed for structural integrity - thinner bark would probably be easier to work with.
So, if you see...

Masks to make - list so far
The Bone Mask - done :)
The Forest Mask
The Tree Mask
The Sun Mask
The Moon Mask
The Salmon Mask
The Owl Mask
Need. More. Inspiration.
Anonymous asked: are you going to have different people modelling each mask?
Just ordered another 3 blank Volto-style Venetian carnival masks.
The 3 I ordered in September last year were about £9 each, and they’ve now gone up to £12 each. I’m going to need to order at least six more for this series of photographs!
I must work out how to become a millionaire artist quickly…

More masks
I put my day-job lunch hour to good use today by making plans for creating a whole selection of new masks (Venetian carnival masks all decorated in a very non-Venetian style) for an extended series of photographs with different models.
The “Bone-mask” is already complete (posted here a week or so ago). I’m now exploring some other ideas for mythographic/mythopoeic masks, and...

more masks
Tonight I’m going to work on decorating another Venetian carnival mask in a distinctly non-Venetian style.
I have this idea about gluing torn pieces of thin, blank newsprint on it to create a layered texture, then dry-brushing it like I did to this one.

Brighton
I think I’ll try to revitalise my creativity by having a wander through the North Laine tomorrow morning.
Despite what I said here I still find Brighton to be a creative and interesting place, and I’m glad to be living here.
(Fresh air might shake the inevitable hangover as well)

Empathy on the work problem. Right there with you. And I’d gladly make some art with you, but distance and all…
Thanks! I think the increasing work-stress thing is symptomatic of the whole economic climate. The real threat of redundancy makes it easy for companies to take the piss.
Yeah, that pesky 4000 miles distance would make your...

I think my day job is squeezing the life out of me. The workload and pressure is increasing, seemingly exponentially - especially the amount of travelling to our other office in Oxfordshire (which means I don’t get back home until 8:30pm).
I need to find time to plan & create artwork, and to relax, but it’s in short supply. The combination of stress and tiredness is...
